Gemstone Facial Rollers – a traditional Chinese beauty ritual

Gemstone Facial Rollers

by Daniela Cubelic | Tea Master + Founder, SILK ROAD

Gemstone Facial Rollers have been used in China for centuries & are traditionally associated with stimulating renewal, preventing & minimizing aging, reducing puffiness, detoxifying & helping eliminate congestion for a radiant, glowing complexion. Rolling the face & neck has a soothing effect, making it a fast, simple & effective way to find instant calm. In China a serene mind is associated with anti-aging benefits & a healthy complexion. When you hold tension in your face, jaw & neck, it can reinforce a stress response that the roller will help counteract.

Keep it handy near your desk at work & at home so that a moment of tranquility is there whenever you need it. According to traditional Chinese medicine, there are acupressure points on the face which connect to the rest of the body, so massaging your face has a beneficial effect on your entire system.

I use an advanced technique with the roller that is very simple, fast & enjoyable. It’s a bit different from other methods which are often shown online. The advantage is that it provides more relaxation & a stronger boost to the complexion. You can easily incorporate the roller technique into your facial cleansing routine in the morning or evening.

In fact, for maximum results use the roller after cleansing the face with Nectar + Waterfall & immediately before applying Toner, Nourishing Dew & Jade Serum. By doing it in this order, it enhances the absorption of the botanicals into your skin, which results in a greater boost to the complexion.

Begin with your sternum (also known as the breastbone, at the center of your chest). Gently roll up towards the collarbone in a straight line & back down 3 x. Now continue to move the roller up & down in the same motion but move across your décolletage towards the left of your chest until you get to the far side of your chest, then loop back and go all the way to the right side of the chest. Then return to the center.

Next, gently roll up your neck 3 x but do that only in an upwards direction (you’re wanting to counteract gravity).

For the face, begin at the center of the chin. Moving upwards only, trace one side of your jawline until it ends at the ear. Then do the next side. Repeat 3 x.

Move the roller to the outer edge of your lips and then roll upwards, following the line of your cheekbone, until it ends at the ear. At this point you are under the cheekbone. Move in an upward direction only. Repeat 3 x. Then do the opposite side of the face.

Now, move to the cheekbone itself (starting near your nose) & roll over the cheekbone, again, always in an upward motion only until you reach your ear. Repeat 3 x. Then do the opposite side of the face.

Switch to the smaller part of the roller in order to roll the under eye area. Begin at your nose, & roll towards your ear in an upward direction. Repeat 3 x. Then do the opposite side of the face.

Now, move to the forehead. Continue to roll in an upward direction only. Begin in the center of the forehead, & roll upwards from the eyebrow level until you reach the hairline. Roll the entire forehead but always just in a straight line from the eye brow level up. Repeat 3 x.

Ahhh…. It feels wonderful!

A few additional tips & reminders:

  • Rollers can be wonderful for hot flashes & you can refrigerate the roller to make it even colder to the touch if desired.
  • Always use gentle pressure. Don’t pull or tug the skin & discontinue use if it doesn’t feel good. The roller should feel pleasant & soothing.
  • For the face & neck, always roll in an upward motion (against the direction of gravity)
  • If skin is inflamed or for severe acne or any significant skin issues, check in with a medical professional before using a roller as it may be too stimulating for you at first.
